How is iron overload diagnosed?

There is a range of different indirect and direct approaches to quantifying iron homeostasis / overload.

The main techniques include:

  • Serum ferritin (SF)
  • Transferrin saturation
  • Labile plasma iron (LPI)
  • Non-transferrin bound iron (NTBI)
  • Liver biopsy
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
  • Superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID)
